What is Selenite?

Selenite is a crystallized version of a very soft stone called gypsum.

Gypsum is found all over the world; it is very abundant and is used in a lot of different industries. For example, it’s used in construction, it can be in your walls, it can even be in your toothpaste or your shampoo.

But selenite, the crystallized version of gypsum, is not found in everyday use. However, it is very popular in crystal healing and decorating.

Top Five Questions About Selenite Rock

The top five questions we are going to answer about selenite today are:

What are the different types of selenite?

What are the healing properties of selenite?

How do you use selenite rock in your healing practice?

How do you take care of your selenite crystals?

Is selenite rock toxic?

Types of Selenite

True Selenite Rock

As we said, selenite is a crystallized version of gypsum, and gypsum can crystallize in a variety of ways. This is one of the ways, which is called true selenite.

The definition for selenite is what you see: it’s a clear, transparent stone that grows in these plates or sheets. They’re very thin sheets and very fragile.

All selenite is very fragile, but the one we have here is called true selenite rock. You can see , nice and clear, a piece just fell off because it is very fragile. This is also true selenite where it has clarity. So it could give selenite different colors, but in its true form, selenite is clear.

Satin Spar Selenite

The next type of selenite that I’m going to show you is called satin spar selenite.

Satin spar selenite is a fibrous stone, so if you look closely, you’ll see that it’s growing in very thin, needle-like crystals – parallel crystals. These little needles are like little fibers, and that’s why they call them fibrous selenite.

It usually comes in this white color, but sometimes if other minerals are included when the crystal forms, it becomes an orange satin spar selenite.

It could also be peach selenite, or it could be even a red selenite if it’s even darker. The color of the orange version gets its color from iron inclusions, which could be hematite or other kinds of iron in the stone.

Satin spar selenite is the most common type of selenite that you will see in the market today.

So when you are buying selenite, you will usually see satin spar selenite. It is very abundant, it is very easy to get, and it is a little cheaper than the true selenite that I just showed you. So satin spar selenite is a very popular version of selenite.

Desert Rose Selenite

The last type of selenite that I’m going to show you is called desert rose selenite.

Desert rose selenite looks like a little rose or rosette. You can see the little petals forming around the selenite stone. This grows in the arid desert regions where there’s a perfect mix of sand, selenite, barite, and wind.

So desert roses are found just in the desert, as I said. They could also be just barite roses if they are heavier and if they are darker.

What Is Selenite Good For?

Now, in crystal healing, selenite rock is best known for sealing your aura.

If you have any energy leaks, you will become susceptible to outside forces getting in and weakening your aura. So obviously, you don’t want that. You want to seal your aura with selenite crystals to keep your energy in and unwanted energies out.

Another thing that selenite rock is great for is to channel the universal light, the white light from the universe. This energy allows you to connect with your higher self, open and balance your crown chakra, and absorb all the positive energies of the universe so that you can go forward and let the light out in your journeys and in your healing practice.

How to Use Selenite Rock?

I’m going to show you a few examples of what you can do with your selenite stones for your healing.

Can Scan Your Aura

First of all, you can scan your aura or your client’s aura with a selenite wand or selenite stick to help seal the aura.

If you’re on your own, you could also hold a selenite sphere and imagine the white light surrounding your aura and keeping your energies safe and secure.

Cleanse and Charge Crystals

Selenite is known as one of the self-cleaning crystals, so what you can do is, if you have a selenite charging plate or a raw selenite that is flat, you can place other crystals on your selenite rock charger to cleanse and charge those crystals.

Massage

You can use your selenite massage wands or your polished selenite stones for massage as well.

When the stones are polished, they secure them with some kind of resin or sealant so that they’re not as crumbly as your raw versions. So you can use them for massage easily.

Of course, you still want to make sure that you’re handling it with care, but selenite rock massage is nice, smooth, and relaxing.

Keep Space Peaceful

Place large selenite logs or sculptures or selenite tower in your living space or any shared space to keep the energies peaceful and the vibrations calm.

If you like to do astrological rituals, you can use white selenite rock during full moon rituals and orange selenite for your sun rituals or solar eclipse rituals.

Ground You Back to the Earth Energies

Hold your desert rose selenite after a meditation session or any other kind of spiritual work to help ground you back to the earth energies.

You could also place your desert rose on your third eye chakra and have your light bodies come back to earth.

Call upon Your Animal Spirit Guide Energies

Surround yourself or your space with selenite animal carvings so you can draw in or call upon your animal spirit guide energies.

Create a Crystal Selenite Rock Layout

Create a crystal layout with your selenite crystals and connect your crown chakra to your higher self.

One of my favorite rituals with selenite is to place a flat selenite at my crown chakra and then have a pointed selenite leading up to the spiritual realms. You just lie in this crystal layout for a while. You can even do this right in your bed, so it’s very comfortable.

Of course, there are unlimited amounts of layouts you can do with selenite rock and your other spiritual stones. You can place them all around you, you can place them on your chakras, you can direct the energies in or out.

Find Clarity

Use your true selenite pieces to find clarity in whatever you are seeking. I like to place the true selenites right on my third eye chakra. It feels nice and cool and clearing, and it helps me to focus on the stone and what it is trying to tell me. True selenite, as we said, is the very clear plate-like version of selenite.

Caring for Your Selenite Stones

Selenite is a very soft stone. It registers only a 2 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, so it can easily be scratched by a fingernail.

Your fingernails are a 2.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, so selenite rock is very easily scratched. It comes apart very easily.

When it is polished, a lot of times they put some kind of sealant on it, so it’s coated and a little bit more durable, but it is still very sensitive.

How to Make Selenite Elixir?

When you are making a selenite elixir, make sure to use the indirect method.

You never ever want to place selenite in water. A little bit is okay here and there, it might survive, but the polish will eventually wear off if you are constantly washing it with water.

If you are soaking it in water for a prolonged period of time, the selenite could disintegrate. It could break down, and you could just be left with a pile of needles. Or if you have the true selenite sheets, all the sheets will just come apart.

So make sure to keep it out of water.

How Do You Clean Selenite?

You could use just a soft cloth if you need to clean something off of your selenite rock. You could use a duster or a spray duster.

The lucky thing is that in metaphysical uses, selenite is one of the self-cleansing stones, so you don’t have to actively clean it. You can charge it up in the moonlight.

If you have the orange version, you can charge it up in the sun or the solar eclipse. But otherwise, it’s also great for charging other stones, so you can place your other crystals and have them cleansed and charged that way.

When they are polished, it’s a little bit more sturdy, but you still need to be extra careful when handling selenite in any form. It is a very powerful stone, but it is also unfortunately very, very fragile.

Is Selenite Toxic?

Selenite is not toxic.

Selenite is perfectly safe to decorate your home and to use in crystal healing. There is no toxicity level in it.

But what you might get confused with is if you do research on selenite’s toxic levels online, you’ll encounter a different substance called sodium selenite.

Sodium selenite is not the selenite that we are talking about. Sodium selenite contains something called selenium, and selenium is poisonous and dangerous. So we don’t have to worry about that because our selenite crystals do not contain selenium. They are perfectly safe for use.

Now, just a common sense note: of course, with any crystal that you’re using in your practice, you never want to breathe in large amounts of dust. If you are doing lapidary work, you want to make sure that your face is covered. You never want to eat the crystal. Those are just common sense. But using them every single day in your healing practice, placing them around your house, and surrounding yourself with selenite crystals is perfectly safe.
