Grape chalcedony, which encourages wisdom and restraint, pairs well with the owl, a symbol of quiet wisdom.

Caring for Grape Agate

Grape chalcedony is the perfect name for this stone because it’s not only found in this purple color but also in green, which makes it even more grape-like.

Since grape agate crystal is composed of quartz, it has a hardness of around 6 to 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Because of its relatively high hardness level, grape chalcedony is pretty durable for use in jewelry.

It is also safe to be placed in water and can be left in the sun but only for short periods of time because extended exposure to the sun can cause the color to fade.

Extended soaking in water may also damage the luster of your stone or cause it to become more fragile and break more easily, but a quick rinse is perfectly fine.

You may noticed some of your pieces of grape agate get pretty dusty, and it’s kind of hard to clean them because of the grape texture and all those little crevices. So, rinsing it off is perfectly fine for that, or you can wipe it with a damp cloth.

The main thing to look out for when caring for a piece of grape chalcedony is just making sure the little grapes don’t fall off, so be extra careful when you’re handling it, and of course, don’t drop it.

Maybe just store it in an extra safe place and don’t keep a piece of grape chalcedony in a bag floating around with other stones that could damage it.

Grape Agates FAQ

Where Is Grape Agate Found?

Grape agate crystal is found in one place in the world in Indonesia and it’s a relatively new crystal to the crystal world only being discovered in 2016 so people have only just started to work with it.

It doesn’t have a long historical history of use but those who are working with it can definitely see some trends in what it can be helpful for.

How Is Grape Agate Formed

Grape agate is a botryoidal type of chalcedony, with botryoidal meaning the crystal structure resembles a cluster of grapes. These individual little spheres or “grapes” are composed of radial fibers of quartz.

Grape chalcedony is formed through volcanic processes where lava interacts with seawater, and gaps are left between pillows of lava. In these gaps, silica is deposited and builds up over time, leaving behind chalcedony.

Can Grape Agate Get Wet?

Yes, grape agate crystal can get wet. With a hardness rating of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, it’s tough enough to handle water without much worry.

But here’s the thing—while a quick rinse to clear away negative energy is fine, you don’t want to leave it soaking for too long. Extended exposure to water can cause rust, cracks, or dull its shine over time.

For the best results, use purified or tap water, and keep the cleansing short and sweet.

How Much Does Grape Agate Cost?

The price of grape agate can vary a lot depending on its quality, size, and where you buy it. Smaller pieces or raw stones usually cost between $10 and $80. Polished ones or bigger pieces are more expensive

How to Clean Grape Agate?

After working with grape agate, you’ll want to cleanse it from time to time. Whether it’s a brand new piece or one you’ve been using a lot, a cleanse under the full moon will restore its serene energy.
